Better at Home

United Way Helping Seniors Remain Independent

Better at Home non-medical seniors' support service is a provincial program, funded by the Government of B.C. and managed by United Way British Columbia Healthy Aging.

United Way British Columbia Healthy Aging administers the Better at Home program throughout B.C., supporting over 85 non-profit organizations who deliver Better at Home in over 260 communities. This community-based approach ensures that local agencies are responding to local needs. Sooke Region Communities Health Network attained the Better at Home contract in Fall 2019. Not long afterwards, the pandemic hit and we along with many other organizations had to adjust the mainly in-person service.

Paid services are partially or highly subsidized for those on a moderate income. A sliding scale is used to determine the fee. We do encourage those who are of better means to use these services too. You might just be helping to subsidize a neighbour!

Present services for registered Better at Home clients in the Sooke Region*:

  • Light housekeeping (fee)
  • Light yard work (fee)
  • Handyman service - simple repairs
  • Taxi vouchers
  • Volunteer social telephone calls and visits
  • Volunteer grocery shopping

*Though we wish to have a presence in the entire Sooke Region, we are presently not servicing Port Renfrew.

If you wish to learn more about this service or to register, please contact the SRCHN office.
