ABOUT US

Zero Waste Sooke

ZWS is a citizen’s initiative and Transition Sooke working group that emerged following the screening of The Clean Bin Project at Awareness Film Night in January, 2015.
Zero Waste Sooke (ZWS) is dedicated to clean(er), green(er), wholly realistic dreams of a hometown region that reduces and manages its ecological footprint in the most practical and common sense ways possible. We champion the 5Rs of the international Zero Waste movement — Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot in that order — as a sane and sustainable lifestyle choice. We advocate action at a personal level while also calling for community initiatives that will speed Sooke’s evolution into a model

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Bring your ideas! Looking for Volunteers for:

  • Special Events
  • Community Shows
  • Youth Leaders
  • General Assistance
  • Tech Support

Volunteer Days and Hours Needed: We meet once a month for a few hours to plan our future Zero Waste events and endeavors. All these usually require volunteers to carry out.

We would love to have a volunteer who has tech expertise and would be adept at updating our website as needed, but anyone interested in adding input and helping out with any of our zero waste endeavors would be most welcome.

We organize Repair Cafes 3 times a year, are in the process of creating a dishes loaning cupboard for the community, are organizing free "Swaps" at the library every few months (our recent one was a school supplies swap), have created a bin of used shopping bags for both grocery stores in Sooke for shoppers who have forgotten their bags, will be organizing a campaign to pick up cigarette butt litter in the Region and would like to engage with students more about how to lower their garbage footprint (and encourage more re-fusing and re-using).

If supporting our community with ideas on how to consume less, waste less and create less garbage inspires and interests you, we would welcome you join ZWS.
