Sooke Region Health Summit 10- Year Review Will Chart Progress, Identify New Priorities for Local Health and Wellness 

Everyone in the region is welcome to attend and participate in a series of tabletop brainstorming sessions that will identify local health and wellness-related strengths, gaps and future needs grouped under four subject areas:  Healthy Food Accessibility, Special Populations, Medical Services & Infrastructure and Social & Physical Activities. 

These same pillars were utilized at the first Sooke Region Health Summit in May 2016. SRCHN will compare and contrast findings from the two events as it prepares a final report to be circulated to the Province and the District’s new elected council in early 2027. 

The event will begin with opening comments from Mayor Maja Tait and other invited dignitaries. [add Health Minister if confirmed]. Island Health’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Reka Gustafson will deliver a keynote address focused on Sooke region health issues and the 2025 Western Communities Local Area Health Profile. 

Attendees will then be invited to circulate among the topic tables over the course of 90 minutes of lively conversation. Facilitators led by Kimmik Consulting’s Mike Waters will field input and direct the small-group engagements at each table. Scribes will capture community input as it emerges. 

“There’s no question we’ve seen good progress on issues identified in 2016, including near ground-breaking progress on the Urgent & Primary Care Centre, improved support services for vulnerable youth and the unhoused, new recreation facilities including the SEAPARC skate park and fitness gym, seniors programming initiatives such as expansion of the Better at Home program, and some wonderful new additions to the District’s network of parks and trails,” says SRCHN President Nicky Logins. 

“Yet there’s no question there are significant gaps in services and facilities locally that must be prioritized in the years ahead. The bright ideas and vision that emerge will give SRCHN and the community at large fresh impetus and direction as we advocate for improved services in the Sooke region.”
